Day 48

Afternoon

Having accepted doing a favor for Gavahn, the Ratpack started working on finding Seeshaah Sarass quickly.  Marativy knew a group that could help and took Roscuro to the hideout of the Wreckwash Blades [or at least a different branch than the one Gavahn runs].  The entrance to the hideout was in the sewers under the Harbormaster’s Office.  In the hideout was a human wearing robes with the hood pulled up to hide his face.  Roscuro told the human they were looking for Seeshaah Sarass’s residence and provided a description of her.  The human said the job would cost 30 gp, which Roscuro promptly paid.  The human concentrated for a short period of time and then told Roscuro that Seeshah’s residence was in Ordellia and provided the address to a block of buildings.  This was better than having to search all Ordellia, so Roscuro and Marativy took their leave.

Roscuro and Marativy went back to the Blue Rodent, where the rest of the Ratpack was waiting and reported what they had learned.  The Ratpack discussed options and settled on tracking down Seeshaah’s residence first.  Again they split into a Roof Group [Zitch, Templeton, and Winston] and a Ground Group [Marativy and Roscuro].

The Roof group arrived in the neighborhood first and located a spot near the city walls that provided a good view of the neighborhood.  When the Ground Group arrived, they walked the neighborhood to get a feel for it and learn what was there.  After doing this they discussed where Seeshaah might be hiding.  Zitch used Message to communicate between the two groups and shared his knowledge about lizardfolk.  Roscuro asked what they eat and Zitch answered “Meat.”  Roscuro and Marativy started looking for butcher shops.

At the first butcher shop the Ground Group located, they went in.  Roscuro chatted with the butcher while he bought some sausage to snack on.  Roscuro learned that this butcher carried unusual meats, including bulette steaks, for wealthier clients.  Roscuro bought a spicy sausage and offered to come back later for the bulette steaks [the Ratpack would either find Seeshaah or have a quality dinner this night].

As Roscuro finished his purchase and he and Marativy prepared to leave, a lizardfolk woman entered the butcher shop to make a purchase.  She matched the description of Seeshaah.  Roscuro delayed leaving, taking some time to start eating the sausage and listen to the conversation between the butcher and the lizardfolk, hoping a name would be used.  While Roscuro loitered, Marativy quietly left and then hid, so she could follow the lizardfolk woman.

Unfortunately, the butcher did not call the lizardfolk by name, so Roscuro could not confirm she was the target.  He preceded he out of the butcher shop and then struck up a conversation with her as they walked down the street.  Templeton and Zitch noticed Roscuro walking with a lizardfolk who matched the description of Seeshaah walking down the street and flew to follow from on high [Zitch using a new Flight ability from leveling up, Winston riding Templeton].  After Roscuro introduced himself, she told him her name was Carlyle and she had just arrived in town the previous day by boat.  Roscuro completely bought this story [rolled a 1 on two different Sense Motive rolls].  Marativy, silently following behind, was very suspicious and suspected she was lying.

To get more information, and possibly the box that was the debt in question, Marativy attempted to pick Carlyle’s satchel while invisible.  Carlyle noticed the attempt [Marativy rolled indifferently on Sleight of Hand] but failed to catch the invisible Marativy in the act.

Roscuro realized what was happening, which led him to wonder if Marativy was attempting to pick Carlyle’s pocket for a reason or for fun.  Roscuro asked Carlyle some additional questions as they resumed walking, but Carlyle had reasonable answers and so Roscuro assumed Marativy was picking the pocket for fun [he rolled another 1 on his Sense Motive roll, that’s the third 1 in a row on a d20 for those keeping track at home].

Roscuro and Carlyle chatted a bit longer before parting ways.  Marativy and Templeton continued to follow Carlyle, both suspecting the lizardfolk was their target.  Zitch flew close enough to use Message to speak with Roscuro and Roscuro relayed what he had “learned”.  Zitch then flew ahead to catch up with Templeton while Roscuro continued his search of the neighborhood for other butcher shops.

The group following Carlyle followed her out of Ordellia and to a home in Beacon’s Point.  Carlyle entered the home using a key and started cooking dinner from the sounds Marativy could hear [the shutters were closed].

Back in Ordellia, Roscuro started asking people who looked local if they had seem a lizardfolk recently.  All of them replied that the only one they knew of was Carlyle, who had lived in the district for a while.  This finally made the scales drop from Roscuro’s eyes and he realized the female lizardfolk had been lying to him the entire time!  Dag-nabit!

Zitch flew back to Ordellia and caught up with Roscuro shortly after Roscuro’s enlightening.  Zitch explained what the other group was doing and had found while the two continued walking.  Zitch noticed a halfling was following the two of them and notified Roscuro.  The two went around a corner and laid in wait for the halfling.  The halfling was on the opposite side of the street when he arrived at the corner and pretended to look elsewhere first before looking in the direction the ratfolk had walked.  When he saw Roscuro and Zitch staring back at him, he realized the game was up.  Roscuro waved him over.

Roscuro asked why the halfling was following them.  He replied he heard Roscuro was looking for a friend of his and wanted to see what was going on.  Roscuro explained that this was a debt collection and he would prefer to solve the situation without violence.  He asked the halfling to relay this message to Seeshaah and ask her to meet with Roscuro so they could talk.  The halfling agreed to do so and they parted ways.

Roscuro and Zitch started walking to where the rest of the Ratpack was watching the house in Beacon’s Point.  While crossing the river from Ordellia to the rest of Magnimar, Zitch noticed another person following them.  Once across the river in Keystone, Roscuro and Zitch turned down a side street and then into alley and hid to see who was following them this time.

The half-elf following them apparently noticed where Zitch was hiding and threw a tanglefoot bag at Zitch.  The half-elf then ran up and performed a martial punch on Zitch.  Roscuro immediately recognized the half-elf was a monk of some sort and hostile.  Roscuro stepped out of the shadows behind the half-elf and punched him!

During the fight, the half-elf continued to press his attacks against Zitch, hoping to take out the healer.  Roscuro missed hitting the half-elf during most of the fight [lousy rolls to hit], but landed a critical blow once.  The local city guards arrived before the fight could conclude and the half-elf used a ring of Dimension Door to escape as the guards ran up.  The lights from the spell were very similar to those observed as Frederick was kidnapped!

End of Session

Rat Whispers

[My dice were not happy for this entire session.  I should have been able to land repeated blows on the half-elf but could not roll above an 8 to hit for over 15 rolls.  Every Sense Motive roll I made the entire session was a 1.  Very frustrating.]

[Swamprover was out as she had what turned out to be 4 herniated discs in her neck and was in too much pain to concentrate for the game.  Since then treatment has started and she should recover completely…in early August.  It is also her birthday will have happened by the time this posts, which I was arranging.  As a result, most of my free time was taken up the last two weeks and this post was delayed.  Sorry about that.]
