 As the attack on the site during the Path War happened, wounded were put into the healing devices in the biolab - many more than the device was supposed to heal at once.  They were accidentally left there for thousands of years after being forgotten/lost.  Things went wrong and their flesh grew and mutated as the machine errored or was manipulated by unknowing primitives.  Now the machine contains a fleshy mass with a disjointed mind, slumbering until released.  Then it will seek to kill...and eat.
