Retcon
During the previous two weeks of down time, Boris traveled over to Ironguard Motte, looking for a defensive magic item he might be able to purchase. He ran across a merchant who offered to sell him a Ring of Protection [+2]. Boris examined it and realized that, while it was a Ring of Protection, it also shared its protection over a five foot radius, something the merchant seemed unaware of. Boris bought the ring, paying the merchant exactly what he was asking. Both left the transaction satisfied they had come out on top. [This was a reasonable request by Boris’ player, so I allowed it. The ring was a random roll and the merchant rolled a 1 when negotiating with Boris.]
Yggsday, August 24th, 1st year of the reign of King Vladik the Gamesman
The Revengers reassembled at the Mercenary Guild building along with their hirelings plus Dhekeon and Sir Pelinore. Proximo “got the date wrong” and was terribly hungover, making him unable to adventure this day. Godric also looked a bit rough, but his Dwarven constitution allowed him to survive whatever the two of them had been up to the previous night.
The group headed south, into the Barrowmoor. On the way to the dungeon, they came across ten giant ants scavenging the area for food. Seeing no profit in fighting the ants, the group avoided them.
Once the group arrived at the field of barrows, they marched over to The Pit [Barrow 47] and ran a rope down to the bottom. With only one rope, they climbed down one at a time for safety. After Boris and Adam were down the rope, but while Daphne was climbing down [flanked by Scorpie], the double-doors on the eastern wall of the room at the bottom of the pit burst open and a group of well-armed barrow harpies flew to attack. The leader of the barrow harpies made a beeline towards Adam, the obvious spellcaster, but she was intercepted by Boris and his axe. Boris cut her nearly in two before she swung at Adam, but the mage’s luck held and she missed completely, expiring from the exertion of the swing and crashing to the ground behind Adam. The remaining barrow harpies fired bows at Adam, pin-cushioning him, but Bris charged into their midst before they could gain altitude and quickly cut them down. Looting the bodies turned up several magic weapons.
Once the rest of the group was down in The Pit, they explored the room beyond the double doors [Room 245]. Impressed by the size of the chamber, they were disappointed that it was a dead end. They greatly appreciated the urns of coins the barrow harpies had left behind. Due to the weight, they decided to leave the coins in this room until they were ready to leave.
Finished exploring the dead end, the group left the chamber at the bottom of the The Pit [Room 244] and headed west down the corridor. They passed the two rooms they had previously explored, looking down the side passages on their right but not exploring them, until they got to fork with a passage heading south. Boris felt this would lead them closer to the Temple of Set where maybe they could finally rescue the leaders of the mongrelmen. Prodding the floor ahead of them, Boris discovered a pit trap and the group used climbing ropes to get past it.
At the end of the corridor was a large room with a shelf all the way around it holding gargoyle statues [Room 266]. Suspecting a trap of some kind, the adventurers were not surprised when some of the statues turned out to be actual gargoyles that attacked. One of them was a spellcaster [a Magog, a spellcasting type of gargoyle] and it was the only one to escape, flying through a doorway on the west wall. The adventurers pursued the fleeing “gargoyle” They opened the first door they came to, looking for the fleeing creature and a Darkness spell was cast upon them. Boris pulled his glowing sword, which cancelled the Darkness, leaving ‘Len’s lone torch as the only light source for the fight.
Boris and Godric charged the spellcasting gargoyle in the back of the room, but were jumped by 3 other gargoyles hiding to either side of the entrance to the room. After another short fight, the adventurers defeated all of the gargoyles. The adventurers then searched the room [Room 267]. There were stairs at the back that led down to a bricked up passage. With most of the party suffering some wounds and Adam more seriously wounded, the Revengers decided that they had gone far enough for the day. Plus, there was all those coins they wanted to haul back to town.
The group retraced their steps back to the room at the bottom of The Pit and collected the urns of coins. They then climbed back to the surface, gathered their waiting hirelings, and headed back to Helix. On the way back to Helix they came across an owlbear. Adam cast a Fireball at it, which heavily wounded the owlbear. Godric and Boris raced to see who could kill the owlbear first. Boris won, getting an attack in just as Godric was swinging at the beast and killing it. They cut some steaks from the carcass and took them back to town to cook.
End of Session
[Again, a short session. We started late as we initially did not realize Hrglclxin’s player was not attending. The amount of loot made up for it as all the PCs in attendance leveled.]
[This week they were short an NPC as Godric’s player brought the wrong backpack to the game and had no character sheets. He had to improvise Godric but had no idea what Proximo’s characteristics were so couldn’t use him. Hrglclxin was out as his player was attending a funeral, an occurrence that is starting to become much too frequent amongst my friends. I believe three friends-of-friends have passed away in the last month.]
